Founded in 1929, the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is the oldest and most esteemed specialty board in dentistry. Its mission is to elevate orthodontic standards, educate the public about its goals and values, and safeguard the public against unqualified and irresponsible practitioners.
The ABO is dedicated to four main objectives:
Achieving board certification requires orthodontists to pass a demanding series of written and clinical exams, along with a thorough review of their credentials. This process typically takes between five to ten years. After initial certification, orthodontists must undergo recertification every ten years to maintain their board-certified status.
A board-certified orthodontist, also known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has undergone a comprehensive examination by peers, demonstrating exceptional knowledge and clinical skills. Board certification is a testament to the orthodontist’s commitment to ongoing education, proficiency, and excellence in the field of orthodontics.
