American Board of Orthodontics Doctor Certification

Founded in 1929, the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is the oldest and most esteemed specialty board in dentistry. Its mission is to elevate orthodontic standards, educate the public about its goals and values, and safeguard the public against unqualified and irresponsible practitioners.

Objectives of the ABO

The ABO is dedicated to four main objectives:

  1. Evaluating Knowledge and Skills: The ABO assesses the knowledge and clinical abilities of graduates from accredited orthodontic programs through rigorous examinations and time-limited certificates.
  2. Recertification: The board ensures ongoing competence by administering recertification exams throughout a diplomat’s career, requiring them to demonstrate their continued knowledge and skills.
  3. Supporting Education: The ABO promotes the development of high-quality graduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs in orthodontics, fostering advancements in the field.
  4. Global Certification Advocacy: The board works to encourage and support certification expertise worldwide, enhancing the global standards of orthodontic practice.

Becoming Board Certified

Achieving board certification requires orthodontists to pass a demanding series of written and clinical exams, along with a thorough review of their credentials. This process typically takes between five to ten years. After initial certification, orthodontists must undergo recertification every ten years to maintain their board-certified status.

What Does It Mean to Be Board Certified?

A board-certified orthodontist, also known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has undergone a comprehensive examination by peers, demonstrating exceptional knowledge and clinical skills. Board certification is a testament to the orthodontist’s commitment to ongoing education, proficiency, and excellence in the field of orthodontics.
